NDP Win Halifax By-Election

The provincial NDP leader says their by-election win in Halifax yesterday could mean change is on the way.

They've held the riding since 1998 but NDP leader Gary Burrill says the outcome wasn't a given.

"The Liberal Party had a formidable candidate," he says, "and that we were able to prevail under those circumstances I think says something."

Lisa Roberts took the seat with 51% of the vote.

Burrill says the win shows people in the province are liking the NDP message.

Fatal Accident In Yarmouth

A Yarmouth man has died after a single-car accident this afternoon.

The 54-year-old was travelling down Hardscratch Road when he hit a culvert while crossing Highway 340.

An RCMP collision analyst was called in to investigate.

The road is open for traffic, however RCMP warn officers are in the area and ask people to drive carefully.

Hunter Brothers Farm Celebrates Blue Jays 40th Season With Corn Maze

For the past 16 years, the Hunter Brothers Farm in Florenceville-Bristol, New Brunswick, have made corn mazes and this year's maze is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Lee Hunter says his grandmother came up with the idea.

Hunter says his grandmother is the biggest Blue Jays fan, adding she's already been to three games this year.

The design stems from Jose Bautista's iconic bat flip from last season.

Canada Post, CUPW Reach Tentative Deals Averting Job Action

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers and Canada Post have reached tentative agreements, averting any possible job action.

Federal Labour Minister MaryAnn Mihychuk says, in a statement, that these deals were reached voluntarily by both sides.

CUPW was set to begin job actions earlier this week until a couple of 24-hour extensions were announced to allow the negotiations to continue.

Atlantic Fest Cancelled After Selena Gomez Pulls Out For Health Reasons

The highly anticipated Atlantic Fest 2016 is cancelled after headliner Selena Gomez announced today she was pulling out because of health reasons.

The concert in Moncton was planned for Sunday September 4th, but is now cancelled.

Bridgewater Deputy Police Chief Surprised By Allegations

Bridgewater Deputy Police Chief Scott Feener says he was surprised to learn John Collyer is the officer being investigated by SiRT.

Mayor David Walker confirmed Monday, Collyer is being investigated by the Serious Incident Response Team for allegedly assaulting a teenage girl and obstructing justice.

Feener says the announcement has surprised many in the department.

"It's a shock to the service. Much like any small organization we're a close-knit family."

Feener says the allegations won't affect the service's daily operations.

'Violent Disruption' Postpones Energy East Hearing In Montreal

The Energy East pipeline hearing scheduled for today in Montreal has been postponed over what the National Energy Board is calling a 'violent disruption' in the hearing room on Monday morning.

The hearing yesterday was cancelled for the day after a group of protestors disrupted the proceedings.

More information is expected today about how the Montreal intervenors will be heard. The NEB says their first priority is the safety of everyone involved.

Actor Gene Wilder Dies At The Age Of 83

Actor Gene Wilder has passed away at the age of 83.

Wilder was best known for his title role in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

The actor is said to have died due to complications associated with Alzheimer's disease.

He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 1989.

The actor is also known for a variety of comedic roles in such films as "The Producers", "Blazing Saddles" and "Young Frankenstein".

Wilder also frequently collaborated with director Mel Brooks and comedian Richard Pryor throughout his career.

 

$1,020,000 Approved For Fire Truck In Bridgewater.

A new fire truck is in the works for the Bridgewater Fire Department.

More than a million dollars has been pre-approved for next year's budget.

Chief Michael Nauss says the 33 foot pumper is made to order, which means it takes time.

"It takes about a year for it to be built before it will be here in Bridgewater."

Nauss says the current truck still works fine.

However, regulations dictate it should be replaced every 25 years.

He says the old pumper will be sold once the new one arrives.
