Bridgewater: Mayor Urges Change After Hay Bale Snowman Knocked Down

If you live in Bridgewater or visited the town over the last week, you may have noticed six giant snowmen greeting you at different locations.

They're not just ordinary snowmen, but made from bales of hay.

However, the snowmen have been the brunt of public comment after one of them was knocked down beside Veterans Memorial Bridge.

Many people took to social media to lash out at youth or excuse the matter because they feel there is nothing to do in Bridgewater.

Kettle Campaign Collecting Money For People In Need

The Salvation Army's kettle campaign is going strong in Bridgewater.

It started on November 18.

The group has roughly 140 volunteers collecting money to help people in need at Christmas and throughout the year.

Major Wilson Sutton says that can mean many different things.

"Putting a Christmas dinner on the table, hampers, helping provide gifts for children, groceries; We've helped people put oil in their tank, with electricity bills; I've helped people with transportation to the hospital if they need it."

RCMP Warning Of New Phone Scam

RCMP are warning people about a new telephone scam making the rounds.

Constable Jamall Gray says the latest has someone calling, claiming to be from Visa and asking for credit card information.

"These people are putting out some information there that makes it sounds like they are from Visa - as far as part of your card number. But that's not how Visa really works."

Gray says those numbers just identify which bank you deal with and are easily found.

He says you should never give personal details over the phone.

Par En Bas Jr Boys Volleyball Team Ends Season Undefeated

The Par en Bas Jr Boys Volleyball team completed an undefeated season (14-0) by capturing the Regional Tier 1 banner.

The team went 4 and 0 in the regionals and defeated the host team Hebbville Patriots in the finals 25 -12 & 25-21.

In the round robin play, the Par en Bas Sharks defeated Pine Ridge Middle School and Bluenose Academy 2 sets to 0.

The team advanced to the semi-finals and defeated Middleton 2 sets to 1.

Lobster Fishery in Full Swing

Lobster fishermen were permitted to start hauling their traps at 12:01 this morning.

The fishery in LFA's 33 and 34 got underway yesterday morning after a one day delay due to weather.

Sub-Lt. Blair Gilmore of the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax says there have been no calls to the rescue centre as of 5:50am.

He said a vessel broke down off Yarmouth but was towed to port by another fishing boat and no was was in any danger.

The largest fishing area, LFA 34 has 979 license holders and had a landed value last year of over $423 million.

Queens Ready to Celebrate Christmas on the Mersey

A popular Christmas-time festival is preparing to show its colors in Queens.

Christmas on the Mersey is back for its fourth year with a number of events including a Christmas Tree Lighting on Friday, a kids craft day and holiday house tour on Saturday and the Kiwanis Christmas concert on Sunday.

Charlotte Kelly says one of the other highlights is the parade of light on Friday.

"They're drummed with their torches towards a great fire pit. Once they get to the great fire pit, we have a pow-wow dancer from Yarmouth and he will be doing the ceremonial Grass Dance."

Aspotogan Consolidated Among 11 P-3 Schools Purchased By Province

The province has announced it is buying 11 more P-3 schools.

Among them is Aspotogan Consolidated Elementary School in Hubbards.

The government was required to give notice to the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System to purchase, surrender or extend the lease by November 30.

OMERS and Ashford Investments will continue to operate the facility until the lease expires in November 2020.

Other schools that were purchased are located in the Strait, Cape Breton Victoria and Chignecto Central Regional School Boards.
