The large snowfall last week left many people wondering why it took so long to have their roads plowed.
Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Area Manager Glen Strang says the storm was exceptional and clearing that much snow takes time.
Many raised concerns around how emergency vehicles would get to them through snow covered roads.
Strang says anyone in an emergency situation should call 9-1-1.
“As soon as that call is made, we’re notified right away. Once we’re notified, the closest plow to that area is dispatched. So he’ll come off his route or go to a different part of his route to help with the emergency – goes right to the top of the list.”
Strang says they follow guidelines set by the department and hundred series highways and major routes take priority.
He says snow plows assist other emergency services as well, such as power crews.
“Everybody worked really, really hard last week. And everybody got pretty tired and they really don’t get the credit sometimes that they deserve. And that’s not just our operators. The mechanical branch staff have been exceptional trying to keep all the equipment going and working crazy hours.
Strang says the department will meet to discuss what was done well and what they can improve on for the next storm.
Caution to drivers: storm clean-up ongoing. Rds not bare everywhere; still narrow in places. Not back to normal yet. Pls drive w/ care.
