An attendance policy is expected to be in place this fall, according to new recommendations by the Council to Improve Classroom Conditions.

The 14-member committee, made up mostly of teachers, concluded three days of meetings on Thursday.

A draft policy on student attendance was released by the Department of Education.

It defines what is and is not an excused absence, how absences need to be explained and how a school will address absences and chronic lateness.

The council is hoping to gather feedback from people across the province before meetings in May.

The policy would then be communicated to schools in June before it takes effect in September.
