A local school is hoping their loose change can find a cure for cancer.
Students at Greenfield Elementary School are collecting pennies to donate to the Terry Fox Cancer Research Foundation.
Eleven-year-old student Hannah Hagen says she came up with the, “Cancer Can Be Changed” idea after a primary student at the school underwent cancer treatment.
Hagen has an idea how much they hope to raise.
“As much as we can, because there are four billion pennies in circulation and that would mean four million dollars.”
Teacher Curtis Snyder helped to organize the campaign.
He says the students are really invested.
“Early in the morning they’re putting them in sets of fifty and rolling them up. We have other kids who’ve donated the rolling mechanisms and every morning kids are rolling pennies, putting them in a basket that goes to the bank on Fridays.”
Snyder says the LaHave River Credit Union in Bridgewater will accept pennies or any donations on their behalf.
The Greenfield students hope other schools will begin their own campaigns to raise as much money as possible.
