Walking away from a derelict ship may soon become illegal across Canada.
A motion dealing with abandoned vessels from MP for South Shore-St.Margaret's Bernadette Jordan is working to become law.
The motion garnered unanimous support in the House of Commons and Jordan hopes the proposed law, based on that motion, will be received as well.
"I would hope to see unanimous consent, er, a unanimous vote on it. I think that it is something that all parties recognize is a problem and that we need to deal with."
She says adapting the motion into law will give it teeth.
"I could have developed the law directly as a private member's bill. I really wanted to make sure that it passed. When legislators look at it and lawyers look at it, there may be problems with it. So, I wanted to make sure that they encompassed everything I asked for and we had the right team putting it together."
Bill C-64 will provide stiff penalties for anyone abandoning a vessels in any of Canada's waterways.
Jordan says if all goes well, the new bill could be passed into law early in the new year.
