Forrest Heights Student Council is stepping up this year to help collect items for those in need.

They applied for a grant from the Municipality of Chester to fund the cost of items they would need to "top up" donations over the holidays.

Warden for the Municipality Allen Webber says council wanted to do more than just give them money.

They decided to partner with them for the Municipality's annual Totally Awesome and Super Fantastic Holiday Food Drive.

"We decided, amongst the conversation we had with them that day, that we would combine that effort and work together to raise even more food, more toys [and] more clothing."

Webber also says the student's hearts are in the right place.

"They want to help, they recognize there is a need out there and I think it's incumbent on us to do what we can to support their efforts," he says.

"At some point in time they're going to become leaders in our community and we want to help them become better leaders."
