A local community group is going to Depave Paradise and dig up a parking lot.
Developer Craig Schrader has offered a hundred square metres of parking lot to Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation to repurpose into gardens and green space.
The asphalt will be torn up at the Old Baptist Church site in Bridgewater which Schrader is turning into apartments.**
The foundation’s Clare Kellock says the idea is to help deal with stormwater.
“It’s fairly easy to plant a rain garden and it’s fairly cheap as well. It’s a really easy way for people to tackle the stormwater issue and anybody could do it. You can do it in your backyard at home.”
Kellock says this is the first time the Depave Paradise action has been attempted in Atlantic Canada.
“The Green Community is the organization who started this project. They’ve been really wanting to start a Depave in Atlantic Canada. They actually came to us and we were super keen to do it.”
Kellock says they’re working on fundraising right now and plan to begin the garden May 5.
