Property owners in the Municipality of Barrington will pay a bit more in taxes this year.
Council approved it’s 2017-2018 $8.8 million operating budget.
The residential rate goes up by 1 cent to $1.01 per $100 of assessment and the commercial rate increases also by one cent to $2.56 per $100 of assessment.
Nickerson says the extra revenue will allow the municipality to have an engineers study done on infrastructure, upgrades for the Sandy Wickens Arena, future development of the Sherose Island Rec Complex and upgrades to the Barrington Regional Curling Centre.
Warden Eddie Nickerson says council and staff made the decision after much deliberation.
“I think this is one of the most extensive processes that we’ve had. We met on 12 different occasions, started a budget in January of this year, had consultations with the public and certainly staff had input.”
Nickerson says council has set aside over $600,000 from this year’s budget to address recreation facilities.
“Council has allocated over $600,000 from this year’s budget to address current recreation facilities, which will be the first part of the funding needed to develop the Sherose Complex. The ssmall increase will allow the municipality to address many projects.”
The total expenditures for the Municipality of the District of Barrington includes approximately $2million for policing, $1.3million for education, and $1.4million in financing of projects.
