The clock is ticking on the future of schools in Petite Riviere and Pentz.
The South Shore Regional School Board made a decision in 2013 to close both elementary schools and has five years to shut them down.
Three requests to build a new school have been turned down by the Nova Scotia government.
But, the chair of Petite Riviere’s school advisory committee remains optimistic their school can be saved.
Leif Helmer is hoping to convince the board to apply to the province for funding to make additions or alterations to the school and keep it open.
“You’ve tried three times for a new build to be that replacement, it’s not going to happen. It’s time to adjust that request and secure the A&A funding.”
The education minister wrote a letter to the school board in November 2015 saying additions or alterations could happen at one of the schools, if approved by cabinet.
A study from last year indicates an A&A at either school would cost between $5.5 and $6-million.
A community meeting was held Monday in Petite Riviere to provide information to roughly 100 people.
Further discussion will be held during tonight’s South Shore Regional School Board meeting at 6:30 p.m at the office on Wentzell Drive in Bridgewater.
