The most popular theories have been that the structure underneath is a paint-ball course or perhaps a firefighters training course, due to the truck parked beside it.
In actuality it’s a unique art gallery of sorts.
Nicole and Bernd Krebus aren’t unaware of the mystery that surrounds their five year passion project.
Nicole says it’s an idea that’s been stirring in her husband’s mind for many years.
“He actually made this plan for this particular maze 20 years ago, when we were still living in Germany. Then he got up one day five years ago and said ‘I’m going to build my maze now.’”
She says the idea is to make art accessible. Unlike a traditional art gallery the ‘Bernard’s Be Amazed’ maze invites you to touch and interact with the works on the walls.
Through a work share website the couple found some 50 people from all over the world to come help create the eclectic collection of artwork inside.
“There’s Canadians, of course, and from the States,” she says. “But, we’ve had a lot of Europeans, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea…”
The structure is made from some 100,000 lbs of concrete and includes a dome hut that looks like it would fit on the set of the Flintstones.
The maze inside will be delineated by living walls of ivy that has already been planted but still needs time to climb the net walls hanging from a wire grid ceiling.
Nicole says this should be the last season of work.
They hope to open to the public next year.
