A group of seniors in Lunenburg County are learning how to shoot a documentary on their smart phones.
Organizers of the Lunenburg Doc Fest launched a new workshop this year that paired 11 amateurs with industry professionals.
Artistic Director Deborah Beers says some students were uncomfortable with their phones at first.
But she says everyone is learning new skills.
“Not only do they learn interview techniques and also questions to ask,” she says, “but they learn about camera work, lighting, composition, and things like that.”
The seniors are working together to shoot short interviews.
Beers says some of the best finished projects will be featured during the festival in September.
Meanwhile, Nancy Wilson says the workshop has made a big impact on her.
She says it’s been a great opportunity to learn new skills.
“In my former career I used to mentor, and now I’m being mentored, and I feel empowered…It feels really good to know that I’m still creative, and I’m willing and I’m eager and I’m able able to learn”
Wilson is in the process of editing her first three minute piece.
She has high hopes it will be selected as one of those shown to the public.
