The Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle drive surpassed expectations in Lunenburg County.

Major Wilson Sutton of the Bridgewater Salvation Army, says they received around $71,000 in donations, passing their $65,000 goal.

After letting the public know they were a little behind in their goal last week, Sutton says the people pitched in.

"We let them know we were down and the people came alongside and supported the ministry and made an extra effort to give not only through the kettles but their regular donations."

Sutton says he wants to extend his gratitude to both the community as well as the volunteers.

"We appreciate all that the organizations, churches, groups, people did to pull together to help the Salvation Army to do and provide the services that it did, not just throughout Christmas but what it does throughout the year."

Sutton also commended the 25 new volunteers who helped out with the drive.

The cash will go toward things like groceries and emergency power bills for Lunenburg County families in need.
