Icy conditions took many drivers by surprise Wednesday morning, including school busses.
South Shore Regional School Board spokesperson Theresa Schroder says crews followed normal procedures and determined roads were good.
She says it wasn’t until bus drivers took to the roads they discovered some roads weren’t passable.
“It trickled in as we found out from our drivers. So it was kind of an odd situation today. But, usually it’s determined first thing if the region has back road closures or if schools are going to be closed.”
Schroder says as reports came in, they began moving busses to their back-road closure plan.
“People who live on these back roads – and they’ve been informed, they’re well aware of the protocol. Either they drive them out to the end of the road where the paved road starts, or they walk out, or whatever they need to do, and then the bus picks them up.”
Schroder says parents and students should listen for announcements on the radio for changes to bus routes.
She says they also provide updates via the school board website and on Twitter.
