Fair weather and clear skies made for a record setting sail.

Seventy three boats from Canada and the US competed in the 2017 Marble Head to Halifax Race.

Prospector, a 68 foot racing yacht smashed the course record by over two hours, covering the 363 nautical miles in 28 hours, 28 minutes and 50 seconds.

Co-race director Anne Coulombe says the event has a long history.

"We've been running this race between two of the oldest clubs in North America, the Boston Yacht Club and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron for well over 110 years."

Coulombe says that has led to some great friendships.

"People meet on the race and they keep visiting each other, sailing with each other for years after they've raced."

Held every two years, Coulombe says the only time the races weren't run was during the two world wars.
