Hands-on training has turned into community projects for NSCC students.
The province recently announced $50,000 in “Difference Dollars” funding toward Nova Scotia Community College student-led projects.
Each project was eligible to receive between $500 and $2,500.
Students in the Natural Resources program at Lunenburg Campus worked with the Mersey Tobiatic Research Institute to build ten loon platforms.

Jasmine Duffney, a student in the Natural Resources program explains the platforms are important to loons because they make their nests on the riverbanks.
“Our rising water levels are going to be a problem in the future, and they’re starting to become a problem. So this increases their chances of survival.”
The platforms were designed by two local outdoorsmen and built by NSCC students using materials readily available at a hardware store.
Duffney says the funding made the project possible.
“I think that if these funds weren’t available, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to do it. And it’s geared towards helping the community as a whole as well. So it not only benefits us, but it benefits the whole community and wildlife.”
Four other projects at the Lunenburg Campus were among those that received funding.
