A statue to recognize a former black Canadian boxing champion from Liverpool is expected to be ready next spring.
The J & W Murphy Foundation committed funding in June for the Terrance “Tiger” Warrington structure.
Local concrete artist Ivan Higgins is creating sketches of the statue before he enters the design phase in the winter.
Executive Director Brian Fralic says the statue will be visible to all.
“Tiger was a pretty big man and then you add the base with the storyboard. Depending on the base and the storyboard and the amount of space we have, it’ll be very significant; it’ll be life size.”
Warrington was born in Liverpool in 1910.
He was prominent in boxing from 1934 to 1952 and would later be inducted into the Nova Scotia Hall of Fame.
Warrington retired in Liverpool until his death in 1978.
Fralic says they are still trying to determine an exact location for the structure.
“We have had discussions within council and we know it is probably going to be in Privateer Park, we’re just kind of pinpointing the actual location because there’s a lot of exciting things happening in the park and we want to make sure it is the best spot possible.”
