Nova Scotia drivers will notice changes the next time they renew their license.
The four Atlantic provinces have entered into an agreement to provide high security cards to their residents.
Embedded security features will help to protect cardholders against fraud and identity theft.
Drivers can wait until their current card expires before they need to get the new one.
Because the cards come from a central location for all four provinces, it could be 14 days before they are mailed out.
A 30-day temporary license will be issued by Access Nova Scotia while the new one is being shipped.
Fees for the cards will remain the same.
Drivers can expect the changes to start being rolled out in November.
