The “Hebbville Do Crew” will branch out to tackle community projects in the new year.
The club includes over 22 students from grades six to nine at Hebbville Academy.
They meet Fridays to pitch ideas on improving their school, Hebbville, and the broader South Shore community.
Teachers Emily and Cameron Strong spearheaded the initiative. Emily says the students have big plans for the new year.
“We’re gong to start a regular rotation schedule for visiting seniors’ homes. In January, that’s really when noone goes as much, so we want to come up with a consistent schedule and really get to know them more than just one visit here, one visit there,” she says.
The group borrows its name from CBC Information Morning’s Do Crew. Louise Renault will be coming in January to promote the club and challenge other schools to start their own.
Strong says students will be reaching out to the community for ideas and funding opportunities in the new year.
“If you’re a community group and you’re having a fundraiser, and you’re short a couple people, you can email us and you can say ‘can we have five students this Saturday, we’d really appreciate it,’ and we will send five students for you,” she says.
Strong says anyone interested in updates can follow Hebbville Do Crew on Twitter @hebbvilledocrew, or submit ideas to HebbvilleDoCrew@gmail.com.
