If you have autism, going to a movie can sometimes be a little overwhelming.
The colours, lights, and sounds of a movie can all add up to one big headache.
Debbie Wamboldt with the South Shore Chapter of Autism Nova Scotia, says that’s why they’re putting on their first sensory friendly movie.
The group has partnered with the Astor Theatre in Liverpool to show Finding Nemo.
Wamboldt says the house lights will stay on and the sound will be a bit quieter.
“There won’t be an expectation of sitting still … or keeping the noise level down,” she says.
She adds, it’s a good opportunity for anyone to come out and see a movie, especially if you have small children who aren’t able to sit still.
“It’s more of an acceptance piece.”
She says if the event is a success, she would like to see more movies, even some newer releases be screened this way.
Superhero movies like the Avengers, which are a hit for younger and older audiences, often have a lot going on sound and motion wise.
Wamboldt believes adults with autism would likely appreciate being able to see a quieter version.
She adds, the Astor is the perfect place to hold their first movie because the box office and foyer are quiet, unlike in many theatres, which have arcades or commericials playing.
The movie is being shown April 23 at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased at the door for $3.00.
