A house has been deemed a total loss after fire last night on Commercial Street in Port Medway.
Roughly 50-60 firefighters from Queens and Lunenburg counties responded to the call around 6 p.m Tuesday evening and remained on scene until almost midnight.
Port Medway Fire Chief Kendall Farmer says they got a lot of the fire out but began to struggle when flames reached the attic because of the home’s steel roof.
With help from Liverpool’s ladder truck, holes were cut in the roof and the fire was extinguished.
Farmer says the cause was accidental after fire from a barbecue spread to the home’s deck.
No one was injured.
A man, the lone occupant of the home, was able to find accommodations on his own.
Farmer says he appreciates help from the 11 fire departments that were involved.
Firefighters from Port Medway, Mill Village, Greenfield, Italy Cross, Liverpool, North Queens, and Bridgewater responded to the scene while those from United Communities, Tri District Fire Rescue, Petite Rivière and Hemford were on standby.
