Lunenburg firefighters are once again prepared to fight fires inside and out.
The Lunenburg and District Fire Department has received 37 sets of new protective gear for their front line Red Tag firefighters.
Each set costs between $3-3,500 each, and needs to be replaced every ten years.
Fire Chief Darren Romkey said without them, the department wouldn’t be as effective as they are.
“If we were denied this personal protective equipment, all we would be able to is go to a house fire and fight it from the outside,” he said.
“We wouldn’t be able to go inside to anybody out, and we wouldn’t be able to do our job as good as we do it now.”
The equipment is vital for the department, and comes at a cost of $120,000 for the order.
Romkey said they wouldn’t be able to get it without the help of town council and the District 1 & 2 fire Commission.
“We’d have to spend a whole lot of time fundraising to cover the cost of this gear,” he said.
“More time fundraising means less time training for potential emergency situations.”
The cost of the gear was offset by funds from the provincial Emergency Responders Fund and the 2019/20 town capital budget.
