With winter weather finally hitting the South Shore this week RCMP are reminding people this type of weather warrants different driving behavior.
This year’s campaign titled “#WinterWise” released these tips on how to best handle winter weather on the road.
- Plan ahead. Check weather and road conditions before heading out and adjust your expected arrival time accordingly so that you have lots of time to arrive safely at your destination.
- Slow down. Roads are unpredictable when they’re slippery so it’s best to drive at a slower speed than you would normally. Accelerate and stop gradually to maintain traction and avoid spinning your wheels.
- Keep your distance. It takes longer to stop on a slippery road. Look ahead and keep plenty of distance between you and other vehicles.
- Be prepared- Consider investing in winter tires and assemble a winter emergency kit with items to keep you warm and hydrated if you become stranded on the road. For more information on things to keep in your emergency kit, visit the Canadian Red Cross website.
- Stay calm and focused. Remaining calm and focused will allow you to respond better to unexpected challenges on wintery roads. Remember, other drivers, are dealing with the same challenges.
RCMP also say that regulations on going around stopped or moving emergency vehicles do not change in the winter but you are only obliged to slow down and move over if it safe to do so.
