Now that Christmas is over most people will be throwing their trees to the curb.
However, the Nature Conservancy of Canada is asking that you do something a bit different this year.
They are calling on people to save their trees over the winter, and place them in their backyards in order to provide shelter and food for birds.
Andrew Holland with the NCC says bird populations are facing some of the most difficult challenges lately, with a study showing over 150 million birds have died in the last 50 years.
He suggests turning the tree into a fun family activity.
“Once their done with it in their living room, they can take it outside and decorate it out there. Really have a bit of fun with it,” he said.
“Decorate it with some pine cones with peanut butter on them or scatter peanuts on it, which will provide a bit of a food source to birds. That can really be beneficial during these colder months.”
He adds that by spring time most of the needles should be gone at which point you can dispose of the tree.
