MLA Hugh MacKay has announced his resignation from the liberals after facing yet another impaired driving charge.
The Chester-St. Margaret’s MLA announced he would be stepping away from the Nova Scotia liberal caucus and instead represent his area as an independent in light of his new charge.
The charge was placed earlier this month for an alleged offence dating back to 2018. This is his second impaired driving charge in the last two years, with his first stemming from an incident on Oct. 13, 2019.
In a statement, MacKay says he doesn’t want to tarnish the Liberal government’s work throughout the province through association with him.
He says “Though I do not know the specifics of this charge, I am mindful of the fact that these claims are
not to be taken lightly. ”
Premier Stephen McNeil followed up with a statement supporting MacKay’s choice, and notes MacKay’s current enrollment in addictions treatment.
