Today at Queens Place Emera Centre community members from Liverpool and surrounding areas to celebrate a local Olympian.
Sarah Mitton recently qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after throwing 18.84 metres in Auckland, New Zeland. For context, the threshold for the Olympics is 18.5 metres with podium scores at this year’s Olympics expected to be around 19.5 metres.
The celebration featured many people who have played a key role in Mitton’s development. Included among them was her former coach Greg Killam who first taught Mitton at South Queens Middle School. He says it was clear she was talented early on “We all knew when we saw her, she could be world-class in multiple sports but she decided to focus on track and I couldn’t be prouder.”
Mitton herself was bashful during the proceeding as she collected certificates and honours from various people. After which she took to the podium and thanked everyone who has been a part of the journey “I’m so thankful for this, not everyone has a community like this.” She adds ” knowing when I come home the whole community, not just Brooklyn or Liverpool but the whole community is cheering me on it’s really amazing.”
As of now Team Canada and Olympic officials maintain that the Tokyo games are still set to take place. Mitton says she has been told by Team Canada to continue training under the assumption the games will begin on July 24.
