The province’s Lands and Forestry department has declared a ban on open fires to protect Nova Scotia’s forests during the COVID-19 pandemic.
For many Nova Scotians, this may come as a suprise as most parts of the province still have some snow on the ground or very wet ground.
According to Wildfire Prevention Officer Kara McCurdy the move comes in an effort to protect the public and first responders from COVID-19 “Fires often bring people together and if they get out of control lots of emergency responders would be forced into close contact with one another.”
The ban prohibits open fires for any purpose in woods or within 1,000 feet of woods in any part of the province.
The ban does not apply to private campgrounds.
The fire ban is in effect until May 15.
