Parks Canada have closed Kejimkujik Seaside temporarily due to increased black bear activity in the area.
They say that staff and community members have been reporting more sightings recently in the St. Catherine’s area.
Parks Canada says the move is in an effort to protect both the public and wildlife.
In a release from Parks Canada, they outlined why this is should be resolved shortly.
“The black bear population at Kejimkujik Seaside is healthy, thanks to the largely undisturbed habitat and abundant food supply. The increased activity being observed is not unusual. It is likely the bears will move away from the shoreline as food becomes more plentiful in the woods.”
“By reducing the potential of bear-human encounters through the guidelines and closures, Parks Canada is encouraging natural black bear behaviour and reducing the likelihood of risky behaviour which can happen when bears become comfortable with humans.”
Parks Canada opened Kejimkujic National Park and the National Historic Site (Inland) on June 1st and they remain open during the closure of the Seaside site.
The Seaside site had to be similarly closed last year for the same reason.
