Bridgewater will have its own protest calling for racial equality after one individual stepped up and decided to organize a demonstration of the report.
David Mitchell is Bridgewater’s mayor but he says this is something he’s undertaking as a private citizen.
Mitchell felt it was necessary that Bridgewater residents have an opportunity to show their support. He says even though it might not be as apparent racism does exist on the South Shore.
“This isn’t just an American issue or a Toronto or Montreal problem,” Mitchell said, “This is a people problem and it affects our community too.”
He says in many cases people may not think they are being racist but that’s why it’s important to host rallies like this that can help teach people about their actions.
Invitations have been extended to the entire community by Mitchell but if you’re planning to show up he asks that you stay in your bubble and wear a mask.
Ensuring everyone is being safe is important to Mitchell for more reasons than just the physical health of the community, “I don’t want the message to get derailed by distractions so it’s important that people are prepared and know how to demonstrate safely.”
The event called Take a Knee Against Racism will take place in Pijinuiskaq Park and is scheduled for Thursday, June 4 at 7:00 p.m.
