Update 12:35 p.m.
Deputy Chief Danny McPhee of the Bridgewater Police Service says the two people struck by the car were following the man who had taken their keys into the parking lot.
He also says despite returning to the scene he does not believe the man was turning himself in, “He was actually being restrained by customers when our officers arrived so we do not believe he returned to turn himself in.”
The Bridgewater Police Service responded to 911 calls reporting a car had been stolen from the Bridgewater Superstore at around 9:00 pm on Tuesday.
They say a man had taken a woman’s car keys while she was in the store after which he found and took the car.
Upon leaving the parking lot the driver struck the owner and her adult son, both sustained minor injuries and are not believed to be known to the driver.
Chad Leary of Dartmouth abandoned the vehicle shortly after and he was arrested when he returned to the scene.
Leary is now in custody and faces numerous charges of Theft of Motor Vehicle, Assault Causing Bodily Harm, Dangerous Driving, Mischief, and Failure to Stop after the accident.
He will be appearing in Bridgewater Provincial Court today.
