Michelle Greek is very involved in her community of Barss Corner and has decided to go one step further.
She will be running for a seat on municipal council for District 7 this fall.
The district covers Barss Corner, Parkdale, Maplewood, Elmwood, Newburne, Cornwall, Watford, Scarsdale, Upper Northfield and part of Lower Northfield.
From Blockhouse originally, Greek moved to Barss Corner in 2015 and lives there with her husband and three children.
Greek says she has thought about running in the past two elections but it wasn’t the right time for her.
“I would like to be the voice for the community, I love it. I am very passionate, I am quite involved, I feel connected to the community. I want to be part of the positive changes,” she said.
Greek leads a very busy life volunteering for the community; as a volunteer firefighter and medical first responder with the New Germany Fire Department, treasurer for both the Barss Corner Community Hall and New Germany Elementary School (NGES) Home and School Association, a parent representative for the NGES Student Advisory Council, a volunteer for the Parkdale Maplewood Community Hall and the New Germany Connections newsletter.
She recently served as vice chair for the Parkdale Maplewood Women’s Institute and chair of New Germany Area Promotion Society and works as a temp with Canada Post filling in when needed at Barss Corner and New Germany Post Offices.
Issues she wants to address if elected is the issue of establishing reliable rural Internet which the municipality has taken on.
“My house is one of many that has had to deal with students distance learning and parents trying to work from home. With the Internet the way it is it was just impossible.”
She says she also wants to be part of the promotion and development of the accessibility plan for the municipality.
“I want to help bridge the gap between the different levels of government.”
