Local fire departments struggled to locate a small forest fire after they received reports of smoke in a wooded area near the Fauxburg Road yesterday at around 4 p.m.
According to Mahone Bay Fire Department Captain Connor Veinot the fire was about a kilometer away from the nearest dirt road which made it tough to access.
The Department of Natural Resources had dispatched their helicopter to assist and the Lunenburg Fire Department was preparing their new drone to help as well but firefighters on the scene were able to locate the fire before they could arrive.
“The fire was mostly smoldering by the time we got in there and we were able to quickly get it under control,” Veinot said.
Firefighters from nearby also aided by utilizing their own ATVs and side by sides, Captain Veinot says “It was a big help because as you can imagine it’s tiring trying to haul all that gear back there and time was of the essence.”
The dry conditions of yesterday had firefighters concerned about the possibility of spread and things could have gone much worse if there was strong wind.
The cause of the fire is still unknown but Captain Veinot says they did find a makeshift firepit nearby though it was unclear if it was used recently. He also wants people to be aware that we were and still are under a burn ban so any outdoor fires regardless of what precautions you take are illegal.
