I don’t put in a huge garden. Usually just a few things to make myself feel like I am actually growing something. And I do like to have a few fresh tomatoes.
There have been years I have grown far too many tomatoes, putting in many more plants than a really need. The good thing is, on top of being able to make extra tomatoes into sauce, you can also just freeze them and use them to cook with later. So they never went to waste.
However, I have cut back a bit. This year, it was just a half dozen plants.
Two were the small tomatoes, which are a great snack food. Many don’t even make it out of the back yard. They just find a way directly to my mouth as I inspect the plants. You do need to keep your energy up.
Two are some sort of red variety. There are a lot of ways to use tomatoes, and some form of standard red tomato fits the bill.
And I also have a couple of yellow tomatoes. I like the yellow ones. They are sweeter and less acidic. A great tomato to just slice and eat. They would also probably make a really interesting pasta sauce, since it would likely turn out a rather interesting yellow colour. I may have to give that a try. If any of them survive that long.
