In a few weeks, it’s possible that the relatively small town of Bridgewater could be home to the newest Miss Universe Canada.
Dr. Sophie Church who grew up in Bridgewater is one of fifty finalists that will be competing in Canada’s top pageant.
She recently graduated from Dalhousie Medical School where she earned her M.D. with distinction, a designation awarded to the top ten percent of students in each graduating class.
Church decided to run this year so she could show that pageants are about more than looks, “They can be really positive experiences, I want to show people it’s not all about glitter and that it’s about women with substance, having something to say and sharing it with the world.”
Mental health issues are particularly important to Dr. Church who now works as a Resident Physician in Halifax with a specialty in Psychiatry and she hopes to use this platform to spread awareness about them, “My experience in the mental health sector has helped give me some perspective on how we can improve our mental health care system, so the opportunity to speak about it nationally and potentially internationally would be amazing.”
The competition gets started on the third week of October with the finalists competing in various competitions throughout the week. A panel of judges will then determine who will go on to represent Canada at the International Miss Universe competition.
If selected it would mark Church’s second time representing Canada in an international pageant as she previously travelled to Nicaragua to represent Canada in the Teen Universe pageant, where she placed as 3rd runner up.
The event will also crown a people’s choice winner which will be determined by a fan vote which you can participate in online.
