There will be no Lunenburg Community Christmas Dinner this year amidst concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year was set to see the 13th edition of the event which aims to provide an opportunity for the community to get together during the holiday season.
Al MacIntyre who serves on the planning committee says for many people it’s something they look forward to all year, “Many of the people who attend have moved from away and don’t have much family in the area so we wanted to put something on that helped people connect with their community and over the past 12 years it’s been tremendously successful.”
According to McIntyre, a large majority of the attendees are seniors and as such, they are considered a higher risk when it comes to COVID-19.
It’s unfortunate the event couldn’t be held this year according to McIntyre who recounted one example of how much the event means to some people, “One year we offered to pick people up and one of our drivers went to pick up an older couple, he says when he got to the door their eyes lit up and he knew that why they were doing the event, to give people a cherished memory during the holidays.”
This year’s event, therefore, will not take place but McIntyre says unless the pandemic is still going on next year they plan to host the 13th Lunenburg Community Christmas Dinner in 2021.
