Municipal elections have wrapped up around the South Shore and they’ve yielded a few interesting storylines.
One trend that was noticeable virtually everywhere was voting was up. One likely cause for the increased turnout was the switch to e-voting which was done in most South Shore communities with the exception of Clarks Harbour and Queens County.
Reclaiming her seat for The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg was Carolyn Bolivar-Getson.
When reached for a comment on her win, she said, ” I need to thank all the people who have supported me and I’m excited to get back to work, I also want to welcome all the new councillors and congratulate everyone who ran because it’s no easy feat to run for office.”
In the Town of Lunenburg, Matt Risser claimed the mayoral seat over former Deputy Mayor John McGee. The mayoral seat was left open after Rachel Bailey announced she would not be seeking reelection this summer.
In reaction to news of his election, Risser said, “We’ve worked really hard this campaign and I’m really excited to get to work.”
The Town of Shelburne also had a mayoral turnover with Harold Locke claiming victory over incumbent Karen Harris Mattatall by a margin of 98 votes.
In Bridgewater, they had ten candidates running for six council seats which were claimed by Cheryl Fougere, Jennifer McDonald, Andrew Tanner, Stacey Colwell, Wayne Thorburne and Mike Conklin.
The Region of Queens Municipality also saw Darlene Norman unseat David Dagley with a vote of 1,336 to 845. Susan MacLeod was a close second at 1,106.
