It was embarrassing. And a touch painful. But it could have been worse.
While walking the dog on Saturday, I slipped on the ice. Nothing serious, but my butt did meet the ground. A couple times. It was not my favourite part of the day, but there were no serious injuries. I may have loosened a filling of two, but no broken bones or concussions of anything like that. But it was a bit embarrassing.
This is due to the fact that I have a set of studs for my feet. I’m not sure what the official name is for them. Some call them crampons, but crampons seem to be those things with the great long spikes that would make it possible to walk up a vertical wall of ice. I’m sure that comes in handy at times, but I’m talking about the little metal studs that just strap over your boots.
As I said, I have a set. For some reason, I was not wearing them on Saturday. That changed on Sunday. I wore the studs. No slips, no falls. Just normal walking.
These things are not uncomfortable to use. In fact, you hardly know they are there. Although you may want to make sure not to wear them indoors and cross over your new hardwood floor. That would probably not go over well. But they work great on ice.
I would have said I was kicking myself for not wearing them on Saturday. But the frozen earth did that for me.
I bought these things many years ago because I thought I should try to avoid slipping and falling. Now the trick is to remember to wear them.
