Lunenburg-based HB Studios have been purchased by video game giant 2K Games.
HB Studios have a long history of developing sports video games, as do 2K who are most well known for their 2K NBA series.
Most recently HB Studios developed PGA Tour 2K21 which was then distributed by 2K.
“The team’s love and knowledge of golf is immediately evident in our games. We’re thrilled to officially become part of the 2K family and continue development of the PGA TOUR 2K franchise,” said James Seaboyer, President and Studio Head at HB Studios. “Our work with 2K on PGA TOUR 2K21 brought our capabilities and aspirations to the next level, and we can’t wait to show the world what we’re planning for the future.”
HB Studios will operate as a wholly-owned studio for 2K upon the closing of the acquisition. The developers’ Lunenburg studio location will be retained as part of the acquisition for use as the head office for Canadian affiliate, Take-Two Interactive Canada, Inc., with plans to grow the business.
Adding to the exciting news was a recent announcement that golf legend Tiger Woods has partnered with 2K games for future golf games.
With Woods joining the team it’s led to fans speculating he will be the face of the franchise henceforth. A press release from 2K says that Woods has agreed to be a consultant and executive producer for their future golf games.
“I am looking forward to making my return to the video game landscape, and with 2K and HB Studios, I’ve found the right partners to make it happen,” said Tiger Woods in January. “I’m honored to take part in this opportunity and look forward to sharing my expertise and insights as we build the future of golf video games together.”
Woods previously was the face of EA Games’ Tiger Woods PGA Tour from 1998 to 2013, his partnership with 2K is his first since he parted ways with EA.
It has not been determined if future 2K golf games will bear Woods’ name.
