Many people are taking advantage of the warm temperatures to do some spring cleaning inside their home or apartment.
However, that doesn’t mean waste or garbage shouldn’t be separated and properly thrown away at pick up.
The Town of Lockeport recently pleaded with area residents on social media to stop dumping household trash and dirty cat litter in Calf Island waste bins.
Regional Educator with Region 6 Solid Waste Management Angela Taylor says illegal dumping in public places remains an issue – especially in communities with a lot of apartment buildings.
“We see it in more frequently in places like Shelburne and Bridgewater. However, it is a province-wide issue,” explained Taylor in an interview with our newsroom. “People living in apartments typically don’t have a lot of space to store their garbage, so it happens more frequently in these places.”
She says cat litter and diapers are two of the main items found in public trash bins.
“Municipalities do a really good job. They try to provide what they can for their residents or visitors coming to their area,” said Taylor. “Unfortunately the bigger the bin, the bigger the problem.”
Some municipalities are offering doggie bags and small bins to dispose of the waste as a way to keep communities clean.
“A few municipalities or towns have installed bins (and bags) that are just big enough to dispose of the pet waste and this has helped.”
To report illegal dumping contact bylaw enforcement or the Department of Natural Resources.
