I know. It’s May the 4th. What am I thinking. It’s Star Wars Day. The day when we all have the excuse to say “may the fourth be with you”.
But for those who don’t have a Star Wars costume or light saber handy, how are you supposed to celebrate? And what if you don’t want to take the day off tom watch all the movies in the order they were made or chronological order or whatever order you prefer? How are you supposed to celebrate the day?
Well, it just also happens to be weather observers day, for those people who just like to check out the weather.
So if your light saber is in the shop, you can just look out the window. And, since we live in Nova Scotia, you can do it again in five minutes to see if anything has changed. Sure, maybe it’s not quite as exciting as discovering the face of all evil is your father, but it’s something everyone likes to talk about.
It is one of those things that can become a life long hobby. Something as simple as just keeping a weather diary of what each day was like. Although again, around here, that can be a challenge. But there are a lot of people who do it. And it lets you check back from year to year. It could even tell you when it’s safe to plant your tomatoes, but that might be pushing it.
And weather observers also play a role in citizen science, noticing what happens in the world around them and reporting it to others who might be keeping official records.
And when it comes top the people who keep those official records and do the predicting for our weather, there is also some good news in the day. At least the weather predictors don’t miss as often as the Storm Troopers.
