The Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre is now closed to the public in response to the rise in COVID-19 cases and the associated restrictions.
Community Outreach Coordinator Stephanie Smits, says they had concerns for the safety of their employees and those who use the facility. “On weekends it can get very busy and difficult to keep the required physical distancing protocols in place,” Smits said. “With people dropping off their own garbage and then as our staff handle it that creates an increased risk of transmission.”
The recycling centre is expected to remain closed until at least June 5, however, the decision will be made on May 28, and Smits says if cases and restrictions are lowered it’s possible it could open earlier.
Contractors will still be able to use the centre throughout the closure, though it will be closed to them on Saturdays.
With the shutdown in place, Smits anticipates many people will have questions about waste collection and what their options are without the dump. She says people should not hesitate to call them with questions about collection limits, what can be thrown out, and other concerns.
She says you can find answers to those questions on their website or you can call the centre at (902) 543-2991.
The recycling centre also announced they are canceling their seasonal compost pick-up program which allows people to collect compost for use on their personal gardens. They are planning to bring the program back in the fall but that too is dependent on the COVID-19 situation.
