RCMP are sharing few details about how they will handle the start of the Sipekne’katik First Nation summer lobster fishery.
Chief Mike Sack has said they will move ahead with a ‘moderate livelihood’ lobster fishery in St. Mary’s Bay from June 1st to December 15th.
In a statement to Acadia Broadcasting, the RCMP say they will ensure a coordinated, appropriate and measured approach, if required. Resources will be deployed based on operational needs. Information about the operations, tactics and resources they will use will not be released.
They say DFO is primarily responsible for the advancement of treaty rights pursuant to the Marshall decisions.
RCMP will continue to monitor the situation and work with the federal and provincial government. They say their role will be to promote public safety and investigate criminal activity. Last fall saw increased RCMP presence in the area surrounding St. Mary’s Bay.
