Mahone Bay Town Council has agreed to move forward with its plans for Phase Two of their new fire hall.
Phase Two will see an extension added to the new fire hall which is still under construction. The extension will be used for community events and fundraisers as well as serving as the community emergency shelter when needed.
Phase One is well underway and once complete the Mahone Bay Fire Department will be able to move and fully operate out of the new building.
Mayor David Devenne says Phase One was the more critical portion of the project as once complete firefighters will have a building that leaves them fully equipped to serve the community.
“As part of the construction of Phase One our contractors installed a soft-wall with the plan being to add Phase Two onto the building at some point in the next ten years,” Devenne said.
The timeline has evidently been pushed up significantly and according to Devenne that happened because of the opportunities currently being presented. He says the combination of very low interest rates and an agreement with their contractor to honour a quote made before the recent surge in building supplies made the timing ideal.
“Our firefighters have agreed to take out a $500,000 mortgage to finance the project in addition to contributing $250,000 they’re providing from their fundraising efforts.”
The Town of Mahone Bay will be contributing the other $250,000 needed to complete the $1 million dollar project.
Work on the hall should be substantially completed in the winter of 2022.
