A fire at a historic performing arts theatre in Chester has caused significant damage to the 80-year-old building.
The blaze broke out on Friday afternoon shortly after 3 o’clock as thick black smoke could be seen pouring out of the upper portion of the building.

The Chester Volunteer Fire Department were the first to respond to the scene, since then departments from Blandford, Chester Basin, New Ross, Western Shore, and Lunenburg have arrived.
The Chester Playhouse, is a charitable organization for the promotion of performing arts. The building is a cinema built in 1939 and converted in 1963.
The theater was set to re-open this month after nearly one-million dollars in renovations.
No injuries were reported and the cause is under investigation.
