After some confusion, it appears a community organized graduation celebration for Liverpool Regional High School graduates has been given the green light.
Organizers have been trying to coordinate a drive by celebration that will allow students to celebrate their graduation while observing physical distancing and all other Public Health guidelines.
Recently, parents of multiple graduates have been in contact with Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang to determine an acceptable plan.
An open email between the organizers and Dr. Strang made it seem like it may not be possible, but after Friday’s briefing it appears that the celebration will be able to go ahead as planned.
“Graduates can be sitting outside, property distanced while while family and community members in their vehicles drive by to honor the graduates accomplishments.”
One of the organizers, Charmaine Stevens whose daughter is in this years graduating class was relieved by the news.
“He did say on there that any grad events taking place have to meet guidelines and he gave our drive by as an example of something that schools could do,” explained Stevens.
She says being able to have a celebration for the graduates means a lot to them.
“I’m just really excited that they are allowed to have this final get together in a pretty difficult year,” said Stevens.
Liverpool Regional High School plans to host their drive by celebration on June 24th in the Queens Place Emera Centre parking lot.
It remains to be seen if other schools will follow suit and use the idea put forward by Liverpool High but Dr. Strang said in his remarks that they were open to more schools doing something similar.
