Tree planting is now underway at Kejimkujik National Park as part of a national initiative to plant two billion trees.
The Two Billion Trees Program (TBTP) aims to reduce the national carbon footprint as trees are net-negative in terms of carbon emissions. While actual figures vary based on individual tree species the average mature tree absorbs around 48 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.
Assuming there are no major setbacks to the TBTP the government projects it will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 12 megatonnes annually by 2050, as well as create up to 4,300 jobs.
Minister of Fisheries, Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard Bernadette Jordan offered her assistance as the project kicked off at Kejimkujik where she announced that 2,000 trees would be planted.
Parks Canada will be a significant contributor to the TBTP as they plan to plant 150,000 trees in 2021 in 18 national parks from coast to coast.
You can learn more about the TBTP on the government’s webpage where they show a map of locations being targeted for tree planting.
