Becky Druhan is representing the Progressive Conservatives in the riding of Lunenburg West.
Druhan’s career before politics was spent primarily as a lawyer. Druhan has provided strategic legal advice while running complex contested litigation, labour relations, and dispute resolution files for clients in government, education, insurance, and other industries.
Since 2016, Druhan has worked with the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) where she currently develops innovative programs and leads important changes to improve the safety of home health care workers and clients.
Druhan says before entering politics she had to chose which party to support and run for and through that process she chose the PCs. “One thing that really impressed me with the PC’s and Tim Houston was their plans for healthcare along with the respect they have for an open and transparent government,” Druhan said.
Druhan says the PCs have the most comprehensive health care plan and she says her party took a big risk releasing it so early in the campaign. “Other parties can ultimately just take our best ideas and if that happens I say it’s a good thing for all Nova Scotians but we thought it was necessary to release it as we want to show how transparent and openly we plan to govern,” she said during remarks made at the Lunenburg West debate hosted this week.
As for the housing crisis, the PC’s plan revolves around supporting new development to increase the supply. “One thing we plan to do is inventory our provincial land to see what can be used for development and then we will set up tenders to do that,” Druhan said.
The PCs are saying the other issue with housing is rising costs but they acknowledge a government can’t halt the real estate market from growing so rather they are trying to improve people’s income.
The most exciting policy on that front is the Better Pay Cheque Guarantee. Druhan explained the program, ” I think it’s going to be groundbreaking, this is a tax rebate to corporate employers in Nova Scotia that want to participate, they will get half of their corporate taxes back on the condition that it goes directly into the hands of their employees and it would exclude the top paid 20 per cent of employees,”.
One thing Druhan says she battles with regularly while campaigning is the misconception people have about the PCs environmental policies. “I often see people surprised when I explain our party track record with green iniatives, it is a key part of our parties’ identity and I’m excited to continue work on that front,”.
The riding of Lunenburg west is being contested by three other candidates; Jennifer Naugler with the Liberals, NDP Mereydie Ross, and Green Party candidate Eric Wade.
