Running for the Liberals in Chester-St. Margarets is Jacob Killawee.
The Hubbards native says his 15 years of service with the Royal Canadian Navy has helped give him his perspective on leadership.
Killawee says, “I know the importance of completing missions and putting them ahead of my own personal interests, which I think is an important perspective to have in government,”.
According to Killawee while the military is primarily under the scope of the federal government they still play a major role in Nova Scotian politics. “Many people don’t realize that the Department of National Defense is the largest employer in Nova Scotia when we count those in the service and the many businesses connected to the military,”.
He says the province can do more to recognize their importance, but he suggests the approach is not necessarily policy-based. “I think we as a government and the people of Nova Scotia need to recognize that our military is all around us in Nova Scotia, they are our neighbors, our customers, and our voters.”
As for the issues he hears about while campaigning, he says health care and housing are top of mind but he often hears locals say that infrastructure is the most important issue to them.
“We have a very large riding, so people rely on our roads to get to and from work or hospitals that’s why our government is investing in rural roads and continuing work on twinning the 103,” Killawee said.
The Liberals have pledged $84 million for rural roads and $118 million to twin sections of Highway 103 which Killawee sees as the best plan being put forward for constituents of his riding.
