The Nova Scotia RCMP is will be increasing traffic enforcement for ‘Operation Impact’ over the Thanksgiving long weekend.
Public information officer, Corporal Chris Marshall says ‘Operation Impact’ is an initiative the RCMP take part in every year.
“It’s an annual initiative in order to try to focus on education and enforcement of the most significant factors of serious and fatal collisions in the province,” said Marshall.
He explained that those factors include impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and not wearing a seatbelt.
According to a release from the Nova Scotia RCMP, this years theme for ‘Operation Impact’ is “Be a hero. Aim for zero” which aligns with Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025: Towards Zero.
Marshall explained that over the long weekend, you can expect to see more officers on the road conducting checkpoints and monitoring speed.
He added that increased enforcement is something the RCMP typically do during holidays and long weekends due to an increase in the amount of traffic our province’s roads.
“People get together with family or friends they haven’t seen in a long time and have food, drinks, and those kinds of things.” explained Marshall. ” That’s when we get into situations where there’s just more people on the roads.”
RCMP are asking everyone to drive safe and plan ahead so everyone can arrive at their Thanksgiving celebrations safe.
They also remind anyone who suspects that a driver is impaired or an immediate threat to road safety to call 911 with a description of the vehicle and driver, a license plate number and the direction the vehicle is travelling if possible.
