The Bridgewater Fire Department responded to two oil spills along the LaHave River caused by heavy rainfall on Wednesday.
Chief Michael Nauss says neither of the spills was big and they were able to contain them shortly.
With heavy rain falling most of the morning Nauss believes the first leak which appeared near the old bridge was caused by stormwater surges. “The fluid is coming in from the pipe just above Old Town Bridge, it’s not a whole lot of product but we put down containment for it.”
Nauss says they are now looking into the source of the fluid that is draining from the pipe.
The second leak was reported near the Bridgewater Marina. Nauss says there were reports of oil clouds in the water and upon investigation, they determined it was most likely runoff from the concrete deck near the marina which likely had petrochemicals washed off in the heavy rainfall.
Nauss says both incidents have been contained and there is no reason for residents to be concerned.
